DIY Crab fishing tools
Here in Sweden, especially at the west coast, a common thing is to do when you are a kid in the summer is to go crab fishing. You can buy special equipment but I prefer to make things our selves. Most things you need, you can probably find around the house and its an extra activity to do for the kids.
You will need:
- a stick
- a clothes pin or other clip to fasten the bait
- a bucket
- hand net
You just tie one end of the thread to the clothes pin and the other end to the stick, make sure it is long enough to reach the bottom where the crabs live. Then you put some bait on the clothes pin. We use small snails that we find by the rocks, but I have seen kids put shrimp or even sausage as bait! It can be a bit of a waiting game, waiting for the crabs to come and when they do, you have to be quick to catch them in the hand net and put in your bucket. It is good to keep your crabs in the shade and we do not keep them for very long. We say good bye and let them go back home to their crab families in the sea.
